Maybe the reason why are unhappy is because we never “live” in the “present”. We’re frustrated with the traffic because while we’re stuck in it, we’re already thinking of our destination. We’re anxious over our current job because we’re still indulging in the addictive nostalgia of the jobs before which, in hindsight, seemed better. We’re restless over our present failures because in our heads we’re already thinking of the future’s promise. We’re hopeless in our search for approval because we still want to force ourselves to pasts which never reciprocate. We’re dislocated from reality because our minds drift to tomorrow or yesterday, the things we can look forward to or the things we regret.

Maybe if we start living in the now, no matter how unattractive it is, some order will be restored in our lives.
